Nutrient Disorders

Nitrogen (N)

Deficiencies

  • Mild nutrient deficiency of Nitrogen and Phosphorus is used to limit elongation of shoots (leaves and stems), especially in young plants.

Phosphorus (P)

Deficiencies

Signs

  • Dark green/purple
  • Necrosis of oldest leaves
  • Stunted roots
  • Decrease in general nutrient uptake
  • Reduced flowering, seeds and fruits

Toxicity

  • high content can cause stem elongation (not a toxicity in itself, but could be an issue in seedlings)
  • Be careful with Phosphorus acid (H3PO3) used to lower the pH

Potassium (K)

Deficiencies

Signs

  • Speckling, edges of older leaves
  • Leaf scorch: Edges look burnt
  • Mimic water stress
